This last weekend the California Club Casino in

downtown Las Vegas was the site for one of the
Las Vegas Orchid Society’s shows. It was a competition
show, with several awards handed out.
On display were over 50 prime examples of beautiful
orchid varieties. And all were grown here in the
Las Vegas area. President Carol Siegel states that
many folks are very surprised to learn that orchids
are grown here in the high desert. But yes they do.
It is an exact procedure to fool the orchids via
evaporative coolers, humidifiers, misters, and lots
of patience.
And believe it or not, there are even three known
species of native orchid here in Las Vegas. This helps
to overcome the misconception that orchids are rare.
Actually orchids are part of the 10% of the flowering
plant species on the earth.
The Greater Las Vegas Orchid Society issues a warm
and friendly invitation to all lovers of the orchids.
The meetings are on the first Sunday of the month.
And this year marks their 30th anniversary.
The monthly meetings feature guest speakers, supply
raffles, sales, education, food, and much fun.
In addition to all that, there are scheduled tours
of greenhouses, shows, and demonstrations.

Check them out on their web site and feel invited
to join the group.
