I was watching the news last night, and they ran a segment about a group that wants the Nevada Legislators to approve drivers’ licenses for undocumented immigrants. They say it will be a major help to our state’s budget problems, and reduce the amount of uninsured motorists by 50%.
hen my wife and I moved to Nevada from California, we had to bring proof of social security numbers and two forms of identification including a passport or birth certificate in order to get our Nevada drivers’ licenses. I remember thinking “Wow, Nevada really wants you to prove you are who you say you are”. Now, this group wants anyone to be able to get one. All you have to do is go to the DMV, wait in line, give them whatever name you want to use. What’s to keep other people from getting a bunch of fake IDs. You wouldn’t have to prove how old you are or anything. “You could be anyone you wanted to be, maybe suave Earl Flynn or the Sheik of Aribi” to quote a Jimmy Buffett song. Give me a break! Have these people thought this through at all? They want the state to charge these illegals $200 for a one or two year license. They say it will generate millions of dollars for Nevada’s ailing budget. My guess is most of the undocumented aliens won’t go because they won’t trust the system, but other people will get some new identities.
And how will this reduce the amount of uninsured motorists on the road? You don’t need proof of insurance to get a driver’s license, you need it to register a vehicle. These people aren’t exactly wealthy, if they’re paying $200 to get a license, they’ll probably pass on the insurance premiums. Besides, I think you need a social security number to get insurance but I’m not sure on that. So I don’t see how this program will do jack to reduce the uninsured. I’m all for getting the people with no insurance off the road. I think the cameras that scan license plates is a better plan along those lines.
I hope the legislators will think this through and not even give it a hearing. This is one of the biggest crocks of B.S. I’ve ever seen or heard of.
